Lin Fang-Yi studied piano in Taiwan and graduated from Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien in Austria, where she studied composition by Swiss composer Michael Jarrell and took master class by Klaus Huber. While she was studying in Europe, she was awarded a scholarship for outstanding foreign students from the Austrian Ministry of Education and a composition scholarship from the Ministry of Culture. She was also invited to premier her compositions at the Graben Festtage in Vienna and the Music Biennale Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia, becoming the first ethnic Chinese composer to be invited to compose for these two festivals. Her compositions were praised by the composer Klaus Huber and he recommended one of them to be premiered in Greece by a group led by the well-known Canadian flautist Robert Aitken. Her works have been performed in Germany, Austria, Croatia, Greece and Taiwan. In recent years she has branched out into composing for dance and live theater. In 2010, she collaborated with the Shakespeare's Wild Sisters Group and the direcror Baboo on Quartett von Heiner Müller, for which she served as the music director and composer, with a premier performance by German pianist Andreas Kern. In 2011, she collaborated with dancer Zheng Zenglong on the highly-praised On the Road, for which she was the music director. On the Road received First Prize in the Choreography Contest at Masdanza, the international contemporary dance festival held in the Canary Islands, and Best Group at Premio Roma Danza's 1st International Choreographic Competition, and was nominated as one of the Top 10 Performing Art Works of the Year at the 10thTaishin Art Awards, where it was named the winner of the Performing Arts Award. Lin Fang-Yi has been living in Taipei, Taiwan since 2002. She has continued composing, while at the same time working as a music editor for the magazine Performing Arts Review, contributing professional music articles and reviews. She is currently one of the top critics in the field of performing arts in Taiwan. She is skilled at combining her professional music background and her skills as a planner to produce innovative plans. In 2006 she became the head of the Research and Planning Division for the Council for Cultural Affairs' National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. In the following two years, not only did she help the orchestra to boz office success, she also laid the groundwork for the NTSO Music Culture Park of Taiwan and established competitions for musical compositions for performance and publication. She also put together the Performing Arts Development Plan for Central Taiwan, which integrated university departments, performing groups and performance venues in cities and counties throughout central Taiwan to promote a consumer market for the performing arts in central Taiwan. Subsequently, in 2009, she became a specialist at the Taiwan Culture Ministry’s Taiwan Music Center, organizing the The Music Talent Bank project, planning and organizing the TMC’s International Music Camp and the TMC International Composition Competition, and planned the Online Database of Taiwan Musicians to provide a database for information on Taiwanese composers. In 2011, she served as the executive director for the annual Asia Composers League Conference and Festival, planning and implementing feature performances of about 120 contemporary musical works in three cities in Taiwan. Lin Fang-Yi has been living in Taipei, Taiwan since 2002. She has continued composing, while at the same time working as a music editor for the magazine Performing Arts Review, contributing professional music articles and reviews. She is currently one of the top critics in the field of performing arts in Taiwan. Since 2003, Lin Fang-Yi has been engaged to serve as a member of the Nomination Committee and the Semi-Finalist Selection Jury for the Taishin Art Awards by the Taishin Bank Foundation for Arts and Culture, as a evaluation committe member by the National Culture And Arts Foundation and as a member of the consultant committee for the Taipei Arts Festival and Taipei Fringe Festival by the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs. She is also the producer and host of a show on the Philharmonic Radio Taipei radio station which features world music, traditional music, and contemporary music, and has been invited by art plus, Hong Kong's top magazine for art and culture, to serve as a consultant and regular consultant for their Taiwan edition beginning in June 2012. From 2009 to 2017 she was executive officer of National Center for Traditional Arts and also section chief of Taiwan Music Institut which she leaded many projects, such as Taiwan International Music Festival. Lin Fang-Yi leads an alternative art group which called Studio Acht to discover outstanding musicians and artists in Taiwan and establish international network to promote musicians and artists. She is also a successful composer and had commissions from international music group, such as KNM Berlin and Quatour Danel.
