Mei-Mi Lan, a Taiwan native, received her DMA in composition and a Master’s degree in clarinet performance from Boston University. She also received a Master degree in composition from Carnegie Mellon University. She earned a diploma from National Taiwan Academy of Arts. While in the States, she has been a teaching assistant at Bonton University for seven years. Also, she has taught at MIT as a affiliate artist. After she came back to Taiwan, Mei-Mi Lan is a composer in resident of Taipei Wind Orchestra & Symphonic Band and a clarinetist of Taiwan Wind Ensemble. She is also an assistant professor at National Taiwan University of Arts. She also teaches at wind ensembles of several schools in Taipei and New Taipei City. As a composer, she would like to promote contemporary compositions to all audiences. By the cooperation with Taipei Wind Orchestra & Symphonic Band, she is working on a series of educational cmpositions for wind ensemble.
Ms. Lan’s compositions has won several prizes such as: Harry G. Archer Composer Award at CMU (PA) in 2001 ; Cuarteto Latinoamericano 2001 composition competition ; A honorable mentions in Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize 2003 competition ; Metropolitan Wind Symphony 2003 New England Student Composer Competition. She was also in the final run of Coup de Vents the 1st International Competition of Composition for Symphonic Band in France. The first prize in National Association of Composer, USA 2002 competition and Margaret Blackburn Memorial 2003 Composition Competition ; The winner of the 40th anniversary compositition of Taipei Symphony Orchestra in 2009.
Ms. Lan is an very active composer in Taiwan. Beside the first composition recital “The Voice from America” at Forum Music in 2005, sponsored by Him Cultural Foundation. Commissioned by Taiwan Wind Ensemble for kids concert were performed regularly every two years. Two pieces commissioned by Taipei Symphonic Orchestra in 2016 : “American Dream” symphonic suite for wind ensemble, and “Chilia” concerto for violin and wind ensemble have been performed frequently in Taiwan. “Chilia” has been performed with soloists such as Tingyuh Wu (the principle violinist of National Symphony Orchestra), Chi-wei Huang (the associate principle violinist of Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and Ting-chi Huang who is the associate professor of Chia-Yi University. Besides Taiwanese conductors, Mei-mi Lan’s compositions are also conducted by the professor of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Ito Yasuhide from Japan, and Francois Boulanger of Orchestre d’Harmonie de la Garde Republicaine.
In 2017, Ms. Lan composed a piece for native Taiwanese “Song of Atayal” for Nanao elementary school band in Yi-lan county, that has been already performed couple times at the same years through Taiwan. Also, a commission by Air Force Band R.O.C. to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Air Force Day on August 14th, that was also performed several times during the Summer of 2017. Moreover, Hualien Conty Cultural Affairs Bureau’s commission “Song of Hualien” in memoriam of the music father of Hualien, Mr. Zi.-Qian Guo, during the Summer of 2017. The latest work was worked with children’s book publisihed by Hsin-Yi Foundation and recorded by E-Sound Wind Ensemble. The concerts are schedule on March and June, 2018. The newest commission is by Ministry of National Defence Band R.O.C. for the story of Bombardment of Kinmen by PRC forces that started August 23rd 1958 which also called second Taiwan strait crisis. The concert is also schedule on March 2018.
Recently, groups that perform Ms. Lan’s compositions including Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Wind Orchestra & Symphonic Band, Taiwan Wind Ensemble, Air Force Band R.O.C., Ministry of National Defence Band R.O.C., Ji-Yin Chamber Ensemble, Hey Seed Clarinet Ensemble, Magic Clarinet Quartet, The 5th and 6th National Conference of Society of Composers, Inc., Quarteto Lational Americano. Currently, Mei-Mi Lan's compositions are published by Corno International Company in Taipei.
