Kaiyi Kao graduated with distinction- Artist Diploma for piano (with Sugi Shin) and composition (with Ernst Wally) from the Vienna’s Franz Schubert Conservatory, as well as master degree for composition (with Dietmar Schermann and Michael Jarrell) from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Her compositions include various instrumentals, was selected as a assigned piece of Vaduz international masterclass 2007 in Liechtenstein. Kaiyi Kao has been awarded numerous prizes such as the International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition 2009, the 14th Carl von Ossietzky Composition Competition Oldenburg 2014, the Hearing Orpheus Today composition competition 2016. She was selected as a composer for the program TMI 2016 (Master Disciples and Companion) of The National Center for Traditional Arts, as well as the Gender-Projekt Holz-Blech-Schlag (2017-2019) commissioned by the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Her composition was also awarded the Voice of the New and Brillant- Composition Competition 2017- NTSO (National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra), the Augusto Massari Composition Competition 2019 and the AMAT FemFestival Composition Competition 2021 and 2022. She was a finalist of the ICEBERG’s New 2019-20 Call for Scores: UNHEARD-OF Division and the IX SBALZ International composition competition 2022.
Her compositions have been performed in many international Festivals such as The re:construction 2014 Japan | Austria, The 15th Auftakt 2015, The Viva Music 2016, The Taiwan International Music Festival- TIMF 2017, The aNOther festival 2018, The MiniFestival Cameristico 2019, The Festival Mujeres en la Música Nueva FMMN 2020, the NottFAR- Midlands New Music Symposium 2020, the Internationales Konzert- Neue Musik und Folklore 2020, the Gagaku x Contemporary- Naoyuki Manabe Sho Recital 2021, The KUNST-KULTUR-NATUR FESTIVAL 2021, The 2021 Weiwuying TIFA Contemporary Music Platform, The One More Festival2020-22, The Anaeresis- piano composition meeting 2022, The Festival Osmose 2022, The Weiwuying International Music Festival 2023, The AMAT FemFestival 2023, the 51st Annual NFA Convention 2023, the Pledge | L'Engagement 2023- NYCU, the Viva Flauti annual performance 2023, the 2023 Musical Menagerie- Faculty and the EXPLORE- CUBE BAND Concert 2024. In 2019, her composition in the CD-Album “Lutalica” recorded by flutist Mark McGregor, was released by Redshift Music, and in the album “Voice of the New and Brilliant- The Sound of Formosa- 2017 Collection of Music Composition Competition Awardees, NTSO,”recorded by National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO), as well as another compositions have been published by the Diaphonia Music Edition (2019), the Doblinger Musikverlag (2019/20) and the Universal Edition (2023).
Her music has been performed in Austria, German, Switzerland, France, Greece, Belgium, Liechtenstein, England, Italy, Malta, U.S, Canada, Colombia, Japan and Taiwan by ensembles and orchestras such as National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO), KNM Ensemble, ensemble Lux, Platypus Ensemble, Ensemble N, Sforzando Ensemble, Viva Flauti Ensemble, Counterpoint Ensemble, Joseph Haydn Institute Chamber Orchestra, the Weiwuying Contemporary Music Ensemble and the CUBE BAND.
Kaiyi Kao works as composer and musician in Vienna and Taiwan. She was lecturer in composition, piano and theory at the Vienna’s Franz Schubert Conservatory from 2011 to 2022. Since 2019, she has participated in the We Art Together project of the Taiwanese music group Studio Acht (Taiwan Musicians and Artists Promotion- TMAP).
