Po-Chien Liu, born in Kaohsiung, currently serves as the composer-in-residence for the 2023/24 season at the Frankfurt Modern Orchestra Academy (Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie). He graduated from the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan with a master's degree in music. In 2016, he pursued further studies at the Berlin University of the Arts in Germany under the guidance of Professor Anton Safronov, focusing on music theory and composition. He completed his studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany, majoring in instrumental composition under the mentorship of Günter Steinke. During his time in Taiwan, he studied under Professor Tzyy-Sheng Lee.
In recent years, Liu Bojian has embraced "shadows" as a core aesthetic element, incorporating it into the titles of his works. These compositions explore the imagery of Asian architecture, calligraphy, and the interplay of various shadows in daily life, aiming to construct a unique spatial sense in music and explore the subtle relationship between noise and space. For example, his nonet composition, "In einem verlassenen Zimmer," delves into the variations at different time points in the same space due to the interplay of light, resulting in the overlapping of various shadows. By combining reverberations, subtle noises, and breath sounds, this piece creates a diverse and distinctive auditory spatial experience, presenting a rich palette of musical colors.
In 2023, Pochen Liu achieved consecutive first prizes at the Cologne Eight Bridges International Music Festival Composition Competition, the Special Prize at the Ise-Shima International Composition Competition in Japan, and the Rotary Composition Award in Germany. In 2022, he received the Essen Folkwang Emerging Composer Prize, and in 2022/2020, he was awarded grants from the National Culture and Arts Foundation. In 2016, he won the First Prize in the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Youth Composition Competition and later represented Taiwan at the ACL (Asian Composers League) Music Festival, where he once again secured the First Prize in the Youth Composition Competition.
