Cheng Wei-Chung, an Architect, composer, and sound interactive artist who born in 1986 in Hsinchu, has lived in Europe for 9 years and is currently based in Taipei.
Having received basic training in classical instruments from a young age, Cheng joined a guitar club and formed a band during his high school years in Hsinchu, marking the beginning of his musical journey. From 2004 to 2008, while studying at the Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University, the influence of architectural education led him to analyze and contemplate the essence of things in his creative process. He developed a preference for using interdisciplinary and mixed media approaches to express concepts.
In 2011, he was awarded a full scholarship to study at Politecnico di Milano in Italy. During this period, his collaboration with Chinese independent game creator Wang Yi (王熠) on the work "Fish·魚" won the Best Student Independent Game Award at the 2012 Independent Games Festival China (IGFC).
In 2014 he collaborated across disciplines with Taiwanese manga artist Chen Jian (陳繭) to produce his first electronic music album, "Electric Queen·電気女皇," which was nominated for the Best Electronic Music Album at the 5th Golden Music Creation Awards in 2014. After completing his master's degree in 2015, he worked in architectural design in Milan while also engaging in street performances and curating installation art.
During his nearly ten years of residence in Europe, Cheng was exposed to avant-garde electronic experimental music, and his creative approach attempted to connect data between different media and environments. For example, his 2020 work "Ciao Milano," inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic, involved recording daily life segments in Milan and transforming the data of sounds and colors to activate modular synthesizers, generating generative music through a data-driven approach. Another example is the light installation art piece "Under Trees," a collaboration with Taiwanese artists Yeh Lian-Guang (葉連廣) and Liu Zhen (劉臻), capturing the characteristic "wind" of Hsinchu through digital light control, creating a fluctuating and colorful flow of light. This work stood out among 74 entries from 31 countries, becoming one of the six exhibited works at the 2021 Hsinchu Taiwan Lantern Festival.
Upon returning to Taiwan at the end of 2020, Cheng continued his previous creative philosophy, incorporating localized contextual thinking. His latest work, the 2022 personal piece "Trace_Jun," inspired by Chiharu Shiota (鹽田千春)'s "Soul Trembles," transforms the color data of family photos into generative music, reversing it into a dynamic array of colorful lines, presenting the process of generating an art piece. In the future, he plans to continue experimenting with more diverse artistic concepts by combining rational and objective data with sounds, along with various other media and interdisciplinary collaborations.
