Chia-Ying LIN (b.1990) is a composer from Taiwan. Her music has been described as having “manifest flair” (The Sunday Times) and “refined orchestration” (ResMusica Paris), while her orchestral work Ascolsia has received critical acclaim in the US and in Germany, showcasing “endearing craziness and chutzpah of a master” (WAZ). She has received international recognition and prizes since 2015, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize (2018), third prize at the International Jean Sibelius Composition Competition 2015 (Finland), first prize at the International Composition Competition Piero Farulli (Italy), a commission prize from the Goethe-Institut Korea for Asian Composers Showcase 2017 at TIMF. She was the winner of the Seattle Symphony 2018-19 Celebrate Asia Composition Competition and received first prize at the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra’s composition competition in 2019. She was recognised at the Luciano Berio International Composition Competition 2022 as one of the three finalists. In 2021, she was awarded a Composition Commission by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Commissioned by both occidental and oriental orchestras, her works have been performed widely across Europe, Asia and the US by world-class orchestras and ensembles such as the Philharmonia Orchestra (UK), Seattle Symphony, Bochumer Symphoniker, Taiwan Philharmonic (NSO), National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Camerata Taiwan, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Das Neue Ensemble, FontanaMIX, Ensemble TIMF, HKNME, Psappha, Quatuor Béla, Quartetto Maurice, among others; at festivals including the Mänttä Music Festival (FI), Lucerne Festival Forward, Philharmonia’s Music of Today, Festival Archipel (Geneva), aDevantgarde-Festival (Munich), PlayIt! Festival (Florence), Tongyeong International Music Festival (KR), Asia Culture Center Contemporary Arts Festival (KR), WeiWuYing International Music Festival, among others; and in prestigious venues, including the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre (London), KKL Luzern Concert Hall (Switzerland), Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Berliner Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste (Munich), Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome), Teatro Verdi (Florence), Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Hämeenlinna Town Hall (Finland), Budapest Music Center, Tongyeong Concert Hall (Korea), Asia Culture Center (Korea), West Kowloon Cultural District (HK), Taiwan’s National Concert Hall and WeiWuYing.
Chia-Ying’s music has been released on CD labels such as Orchid Classics (London), NMC Recordings (London), T-MAP (Taiwan) and the NTSO. A selection of her scores is published by Ermes 404 (Rome) and RICORDI. Her music has been broadcast on Yle (FI), Radio France, RTS (CH), SRF (CH), BR-Klassik (DE), Deutschlandfunk, BBC Radio3, Radio Sweden, RAI Radio 3 (IT), RTP (PT) and others. Her music has been mentioned by the international media, including the BBC Music Magazine, Hufvudstadsbladet (FI), and Il Corriere Musicale (IT), among many others.
She studied composition at TNUA (Taipei) with Tsung-Hsien Yang; at University of Manchester (UK) with Philip Grange; and at Conservatorio S. Cecilia (Rome) with Matteo D’Amico. In 2017, she completed a six-month Mentoring program at the Peter Eötvös Foundation (Budapest) in collaboration with various prestigious European organisations including Tonhalle Zurich and Teatro alla Scala. Chia-Ying was selected for the Philharmonia Orchestra/RPS Composers’ Academy 2018/19 led by Unsuk Chin. In 2022, she completed a Corso di Perfezionamento at Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia with Ivan Fedele.
2022-23 Highlights include a new orchestral work ‘The Fabricated Sugar-Coat’ (commissioned by WeiWuYing) premiered by the Taiwan Philharmonic (NSO) with conductor Wen-Pin Chien for the opening concert of the inaugural WeiWuYing International Music Festival; ‘Anamorphosen’ for string orchestra receiving its German premiere by Camerata Taiwan and conductor Su-Han Yang at Elbphilharmonie, Berliner Philharmonie and in Munich; ‘Ascolsia’ receiving its European premiere by Bochumer Symphoniker with its GMD Tung-Chieh Chuang; and ‘Sky Blue’, co-commissioned by Radio France and Ensemble intercontemporain, premiered at Festival Présence’s opening concert at Auditorium of Radio France in Paris.
