YIM, Fuk-Wing
YIM Fuk-Wing, born in 1959 in Hong Kong, originally intended to study abroad in the USA but eventually came to Taiwan by incidents, studying composition from Dai Hong-xuan at Department of Music of Soochow University. He went back to Hong Kong upon graduation and then went for advanced studies at University of Wales in 1987-1993, during which he learned composition from William Mathias and Jeffrey Lewis. Yim got his Master's degree in 1988 and PhD in Music in 1993, and in the same year he was invited to teach at Department of Music, Soochow University. His musical works, including winds and strings music, chamber music, solo music, musicals, and choral works, have been published in Hong Kong, Europe and America as well as Taiwan. Yim had served on the boards of ISCM Taiwan Chapter and ACL Taiwan Chapter, and currently is full-time professor at Department of Music, Soochow University. Besides musical composition, Yim is also dedicated to academic research and writing, making him one good example of Taiwan composers also actively engaged in academic research. Yim’s research focuses on theories employed by oriental composers, with the vision of establishing a research center in North-east Asia.
