Music commentary
The original motive for the composition came from reading the novel "L’ élégance du hérisson" (Chinese translation of "The Hedgehog's Elegance") by the well-known French contemporary best-selling author Muriel Barbery. The author of the novel itself is a professor of philosophy. The book describes many characters and their situations, and describes life with ironic, interesting, and unexpected plots, which are fascinating everywhere. Coupled with the special characters of the two heroines, it is very impressive. The novel is very popular and has been adapted into a movie. When composing, the small animal "Hedgehog" comes to think of it, and is inspired by the material of its English name. It began to work and conceived, hoping to create music with oriental colors and dexterity. I use two kinds of woodwind instruments that are good at performance: flute (plus alto flute) and clarinet (plus bass clarinet), with piano and percussion instruments, and I hope to use music to explain the "survival and beauty" of this endangered animal. The main material of the music is taken from the English name of this animal: Hedgefog uses the first four letters of its alphabet, in order si, mi, re, so, (h in Germany is the name of si), as the main motivation for the beginning of the music, and It consists of a 12-tone sequence. Using this sequence and its variants, it is constructed in a semi-strict manner, and partly adopts the format composition method to compose music. The music can be divided into three major sections. Because the hedgehog needs hibernation in winter, there is a similar description in the song.
