I am Chen Yijun, born in Lukang, Changhua,1969. I started to learn music, calligraphy, and painting in my childhood. After studying in the Department of Fine Arts of Tunghai University, I fell in love with movies. After graduating in 1990, I moved to Taipei for work, participated in social and cultural movements oftenly, and began to make documentaries. After receiving my master’s degree from the Institute of Documentary Art of Tainan National University of the Arts in 2000, I worked at the Image Museum of Hsinchu City, promoting plebeian filmmaking courses, exploring the local image memory. I got married, gave birth to my child, and participated in Nongovernmental Curating Organizations such as the Taiwan Women’s Film Association and the Iron Horse Film Festival, etc, at the same time. In 2015, I moved to Zhongli as the founding curator of Taoyuan Arts Cinema. Later, in 2017, I was invited to Da-Yeh University, as a professor for four years. During the time, I returned to Lukang and worked in the preservation of cultural heritage and historical memories. Now,I am a freelancer.

I exhibit my personal care about history and contemporary society issues through a curatorial plan.

It is definitely my interest and continually I work in exploring the submerged images and cultural movements, historical memory and cultural development trajectory of Taiwan. From a contemporary point of view, I try to reopen a dialogue with cultural heritage and vacancies. I keep on thinking about what the curations can be. Is that the curation to become a generator of continuous dialogue; to promote autonomous participation; to summon each other’s inner desire for utopia; to make each participant a self-operating machine; return to their own field, and think about how to carry out cultural practice? Or maybe we want all of them. Moreover, in action, assemble multiple parts that can be touched by itself. Each part of the machine connects to each other in a loop, so that energy flows between them, expanding into a wide network, and continuously multiplying sequences. Its dynamic relationship will trigger and open the escape route. We dream of becoming a fertile soil, a container of meaning, a womb-like space. Prior to meaning, meaning is made possible, open to the external environment and historical time and space, facing heterogeneous others, dialectical, contradictory, and tolerant of each other. Each subject in the process of constant change has enough leeway to establish its own symbolic order.
