Chia-Wei Hsu, born in Taichung, Taiwan and based in Taipei, Taiwan. Graduate of Le Fresnoy National Studio for Contemporary Arts in France, Chia-Wei Hsu’s work as an artist, filmmaker and curator merges the languages of film and contemporary art and unearths the complex mechanisms behind the production of images. Through his artistic practice, Hsu weaves connections between humans, materials and places that have been overlooked or omitted in conventional historical narratives. Hsu has had solo exhibitions at Museum of National Taipei University of Education (2019; Taiwan), Mori Art Museum (2018; Tokyo, Japan), and Van Abbemuseum (2015; Eindhoven, Netherlands). His works had also been exhibited in other international biennials, museums and film festivals. He is also the curator of 2019 Asian Art Biennial at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (2019; Taichung, Taiwan), Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition at Hong-Gah Museum (2018; Taipei, Taiwan) and THAITAI: A Measure of Understanding at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (2012; Bangkok, Thailand).

“Curators usually demonstrate their research and discourse through the dialogue between the artworks. However, as an artist and curator, I focus on ‘creation’ and ‘practice’ during the exhibition rather than analysis and interpretation.” Chia-Wei Hsu believes that when an artist is in a curatorial mode, it is more like gathering a group of artists to move in the same direction together.
